Publication of Sailor Moon

28 December 1991

Sailor Moon is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Naoko Takeuchi, first published in the magazine Nakayoshi. It tells the story of Usagi Tsukino, a schoolgirl who discovers she is Sailor Moon, a warrior who fights evil in the name of the Moon with a group of other girls, each of whom is linked to a planet. The series helped define the magical girl genre by combining it with the team format of Japanese superhero shows. It was adapted into a very popular anime in the 1990s that was broadcast around the world, and also inspired musicals, live-action television and a new anime series. The manga was released in English in the 1990s and again in the 2010s.
