Construction of K'gari

1992

K'gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, lies off the coast of Queensland in eastern Australia and is the largest sand island in the world. Its name, given by its Aboriginal owners, the Butchulla people, means paradise, and the island was officially renamed in 2023. Remarkably, rainforests grow on its sand, along with eucalypt woodlands, mangroves and dozens of freshwater lakes, some of them perched high above sea level, such as Lake McKenzie. The island is also home to a population of dingoes considered among the purest in Australia. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 for its natural features.
