The Confederation of African Football was founded in Khartoum, Sudan, in 1957 during the first African Cup of Nations by officials from Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan and South Africa. It oversees association football on the continent and is one of the six continental confederations of FIFA. The new body organised the Africa Cup of Nations, which Egypt won in the first tournament in 1957, as South Africa was excluded because its apartheid government refused to field a mixed team. Its other competitions include the CAF Champions League. The confederation is headquartered in Egypt, and its growth gave African nations a stronger voice in world football and more places at the World Cup.
