Founding of Council of the European Union

1957

The Council of the European Union, sometimes informally called the Council of Ministers, goes back to the Treaties of Rome, signed in 1957, which created the European Economic Community and set up a Council to represent the member governments. It is made up of the ministers of each member state responsible for the subject being discussed, such as agriculture, finance or the environment, and it meets in Brussels and Luxembourg. Together with the European Parliament it adopts European legislation and approves the budget. The presidency of the Council rotates among the member states every six months. It received its present name in the Lisbon Treaty, which entered into force in 2009.
