Humphrey Bogart died on 14 January 1957 in Hollywood, aged 57. An American actor, Bogart became one of the defining screen personalities of Hollywood's golden age. After years in supporting parts, usually as gangsters, he broke through in High Sierra and The Maltese Falcon, then starred in Casablanca, To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for The African Queen in 1951. His weary, cynical but honorable screen persona made him an icon, and the American Film Institute ranked him the greatest male star of classic American cinema. He married Lauren Bacall, with whom he made several films.
