Founding of Collective Security Treaty Organization

15 May 1992

The Collective Security Treaty Organization is a military alliance of several post-Soviet states, formed from the Collective Security Treaty signed in Tashkent in 1992 by Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Under the treaty an attack on one member is considered an attack on all, though its text and interpretation have been discussed. It was reorganized into a formal international organization in 2002. Russia is by far the dominant member, and the alliance has carried out joint exercises and peacekeeping, including a short deployment to Kazakhstan in January 2022. Membership has fluctuated, with Uzbekistan leaving in 2012, and Armenia has reduced its participation since 2023 because the alliance did not respond to its security concerns.
