Tajikistani Civil War

from 5 May 1992 to 27 June 1997

The Tajikistani Civil War was fought in newly independent Tajikistan between the government, supported by Russia and Uzbekistan, and the United Tajik Opposition, an alliance of Islamists, democrats and regional groups. It grew out of political rivalry between regional elites, notably those of Kulob and Leninabad against opponents from Gharm and the Pamir region, and from mass protests in the capital, Dushanbe, in the spring of 1992. Tens of thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands were displaced. Russian troops and CIS peacekeepers were deployed along the Afghan border. A peace agreement mediated by the United Nations in 1997 gave the opposition a share of government posts, while Emomali Rahmon remained president.
