Construction of Munich Airport

17 May 1992

Munich Airport, officially named after the politician Franz Josef Strauss, is the second-busiest airport in Germany after Frankfurt. It opened in May 1992, replacing the older Munich-Riem airport, which had become too small and too close to the growing city. The new airport was built in the countryside north-east of Munich, near Erding, and it has two large terminals. The second terminal was opened in 2003 for Lufthansa and its partners. It is one of the main hubs of Lufthansa and is regularly ranked among the best airports in Europe.
