Founding of Chevrolet

3 November 1911

Chevrolet was founded by the Swiss-born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant, who had been forced out of General Motors and wanted to return. Durant used the profits of the new company to buy back control of General Motors, and Chevrolet became a part of GM in 1918. Louis Chevrolet left the company, but his name stayed on its cars and its bowtie logo became one of the best known in the world. Chevrolet became GM's mass-market division, selling models such as the Bel Air, the Impala and the Corvette sports car, introduced in 1953. It competes in many motor sport categories, and it remains one of the best-selling brands in the United States.
