Konstantin Chernenko was born on 24 September 1911 in Bolshaya Tes. A Soviet politician, Chernenko served as General Secretary of the Communist Party for little more than a year, after the death of Yuri Andropov. He had been a long-time protege of Leonid Brezhnev, with whom he worked since the 1950s, and became a Politburo member and Brezhnev's closest aide. By the time he was chosen as leader, he was elderly and seriously ill with emphysema, and could barely appear in public. His term was brief and marked by few changes, with the continuation of the stagnation of the Brezhnev years. He was succeeded by Mikhail Gorbachev.
