The Italo-Turkish War was fought when Italy, seeking colonies and prestige, invaded the Ottoman provinces of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica in what is now Libya. Italian forces quickly captured coastal towns, but a fierce resistance by Ottoman officers and local fighters kept them from controlling the interior. The conflict saw the first use of aircraft in war, including the dropping of bombs from airplanes. Italy also occupied the Dodecanese islands in the Aegean. The war ended with a treaty in which the Ottomans gave up Libya, and their evident weakness encouraged the Balkan states to attack them in the first Balkan War.
