Bhumibol Adulyadej was born on 5 December 1927 in Mount Auburn Hospital. The King of Thailand, known as Rama IX, Bhumibol was born in the United States and became king in 1946 after the death of his elder brother Ananda Mahidol. His reign of seventy years was the longest in Thai history. Although a constitutional monarch, he commanded exceptional moral authority, and his interventions in the political crises of 1973 and 1992 helped calm confrontations between the military and the public. He sponsored thousands of rural development projects and was a keen saxophonist, jazz composer and sailor. Strict lèse-majesté laws protected the monarchy, and he was succeeded by his son Vajiralongkorn.
