The British Council is the United Kingdom's international organization for cultural relations and educational opportunities. It was created in the 1930s, at first under a longer name, to promote British culture and the English language abroad as a counter to the propaganda of Fascist states, and it received a royal charter in 1940. Its work includes teaching English, running examinations such as IELTS, supporting the arts, education and science exchange, and offering libraries and information. It has offices in over a hundred countries and is funded partly by the government and partly by its own earnings. The council describes its work as building trust between the people of the UK and other countries.
