Construction of University of Tehran

1934

The University of Tehran is Iran's oldest modern university and one of its most prestigious. It was created under Reza Shah Pahlavi as part of a policy of modernization, gathering earlier colleges, such as those of medicine and law, into a single institution. The main campus was designed by the French architect Andre Godard and the Iranian architect Mohsen Foroughi, combining modern planning with traditional Persian features. The university trained a large part of the country's professional and political elite, and it has been a centre of intellectual life and student activism. It was the site of significant events in Iran's modern history, including demonstrations before and during the 1979 revolution.
