Founding of DC Comics

1934

DC Comics is one of the two largest American comic book publishers, best known for characters such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Its roots lie in the 1930s, when publishers including Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson and later Harry Donenfeld and Jack Liebowitz released the early comic magazines that grew into Detective Comics, whose initials gave the company its name. The debut of Superman in 1938 started the superhero genre and made the firm a leader in the industry. DC went on to create teams such as the Justice League and later imprints like Vertigo, and for decades it was owned by Warner Communications and its corporate successors. Its characters have been adapted into numerous films, television series and animated works.
