Founding of Nissan

26 December 1933

Nissan is a Japanese car manufacturer, based in Yokohama, which developed out of a company that produced the Datsun brand of small cars in the 1930s and was led by the industrialist Yoshisuke Aikawa. After the Second World War it grew into one of Japan's leading carmakers, and exported vehicles under the Datsun name until the early 1980s, when it changed to Nissan worldwide. In the late 1990s the company was close to bankruptcy and entered an alliance with the French carmaker Renault, which brought in Carlos Ghosn as the head of a turnaround. Ghosn was arrested in Japan in 2018, and later fled the country. Nissan has been a pioneer in mass-produced electric cars with the Leaf.
