The Austrian Civil War was a brief conflict in February 1934 between the government of Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss and the Social Democrats. Dollfuss had suspended parliament in 1933 and ruled by decree, and he banned several political groups, creating a corporatist, authoritarian regime that was opposed to both the socialists and the Nazis. When police searched for weapons at a Social Democratic party base in Linz, members of the party's paramilitary Schutzbund resisted, and fighting spread to Vienna and other industrial cities. The army and police used artillery against workers' housing blocks, including the Karl-Marx-Hof. The uprising was crushed in a few days, the Social Democratic Party was banned, and the divided country was left weaker against Nazi pressure.
