Founding of Borussia Dortmund

19 December 1909

Borussia Dortmund is a German sports club in the Ruhr city of Dortmund, best known for its professional football team. It was founded by a group of young players who had left a church-run youth sports club after a dispute with its priest, and the name Borussia comes from the Latin name for Prussia, taken from a local brewery. The club became the first German team to win a European trophy, the Cup Winners' Cup, in 1966, and won the Champions League in 1997. It has won the Bundesliga several times and is known for its passionate supporters, who fill the Yellow Wall at Signal Iduna Park, and for its rivalry with Schalke 04.
