Construction of Pergamon Museum

1910

The Pergamon Museum on Berlin's Museum Island is known for monumental reconstructions of ancient architecture. It was built to a design by Alfred Messel and Ludwig Hoffmann to house the large finds that German archaeologists brought from the Near East, with construction starting in 1910 and the building opening in 1930. Its best-known exhibits are the Pergamon Altar, from the Greek city in what is now Turkey, the Ishtar Gate and processional way of Babylon, and the Market Gate of Miletus. The museum also holds Islamic art and Near Eastern antiquities. It suffered damage and losses in the Second World War, and long-running renovation has kept parts of it closed.
