Kingdom of Montenegro

from 1910 to 1918

The Kingdom of Montenegro was created when Prince Nikola I Petrovic-Njegos, who had ruled Montenegro since 1860, proclaimed himself king. Montenegro, a small, mountainous country on the Adriatic, had been recognised as independent at the Congress of Berlin in 1878 and had expanded in the Balkan Wars. It joined the Allies in the First World War, and was occupied by Austria-Hungary in 1916, forcing the king into exile. At the end of the war an assembly in Podgorica, whose legitimacy was disputed, voted to depose the dynasty and unite with Serbia. This led to a Montenegrin sense of grievance, and some of those loyal to the king rebelled. The country was absorbed into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later Yugoslavia.
