Founding of Real Sociedad

7 September 1909

Real Sociedad is a Spanish football club from San Sebastián, in the Basque Country. It was founded in the early twentieth century and received the title Real, or royal, soon after. The club is known for its long-standing policy of fielding mostly players from the Basque region, in a tradition shared with Athletic Bilbao, which is exceptional in modern football. Real Sociedad won the Spanish league twice in a row, in 1981 and 1982, and has won the Copa del Rey twice, the most recent time in 2021, after a final that had been postponed because of the pandemic. It plays at the Reale Arena, formerly known as Anoeta, and its youth academy at Zubieta has produced many international players.
