Founding of Bombay Stock Exchange

1875

The Bombay Stock Exchange, now commonly called BSE, is a stock exchange in Mumbai and is the oldest in Asia. It began as an informal gathering of brokers who traded under a banyan tree in front of the Town Hall in the 1850s, and it was organised formally in 1875 as the Native Share and Stock Brokers' Association, with Premchand Roychand as a leading figure. It is located on Dalal Street in Mumbai's financial district. Its share index, the Sensex, was launched in 1986 and is the most widely quoted barometer of the Indian market. The exchange moved from open outcry trading to an electronic system in the mid-1990s, and it now competes with the National Stock Exchange.
