The Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur, or Sacred Heart, stands on the summit of Montmartre, the highest point in Paris. It was begun in the 1870s, after the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune, as a monument of national penance and Catholic revival, funded by public subscription. The architect Paul Abadie designed it in a Romano-Byzantine style, and the white domes are made of stone that stays pale as it ages. Work took until the early 20th century, and the basilica was consecrated in 1919. It holds one of the world's heaviest bells, the Savoyarde, and attracts millions of visitors who come for its views of the city.
