Maurice Ravel was born on 7 March 1875 in Ciboure. A French composer, Ravel was a master of orchestration and one of the most important composers of the early twentieth century. His works include the ballet Daphnis et Chloe, the orchestral piece Bolero, the Piano Concerto in G, the piano suites Gaspard de la nuit and Le Tombeau de Couperin, and Pavane for a Dead Princess. He also orchestrated Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. His music combines precision, sensuous color and influences from jazz and Spanish music. He was repeatedly denied the Prix de Rome, which caused a scandal, and in later years suffered from a neurological illness that ended his composing.
