Aston Villa was formed by members of a cricket club from the Villa Cross Methodist chapel in the Handsworth district of Birmingham, who wanted a sport to play through the winter. Early leaders such as Jack Hughes and William McGregor helped to shape the club, and McGregor went on to propose the creation of the Football League in 1888, of which Villa became a founder member. The club won the league championship many times in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. It later became the first English side of its era to win the European Cup, in 1982, and plays at Villa Park.
