Founding of Belgium men's national football team

1904

The Belgium men's national football team, nicknamed the Red Devils, played its first official match against France in Brussels, a 3–3 draw. The Royal Belgian Football Association had been founded nine years earlier. Belgium won the Olympic football tournament on home soil in Antwerp in 1920, in a final that ended when Czechoslovakia left the pitch in protest. The team reached the semifinals of the 1986 World Cup, finished runner-up at the 1980 European Championship, and achieved its best World Cup result in 2018, taking third place. A so-called golden generation including Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku helped Belgium to reach the top of the FIFA ranking from 2015 to 2018.
