The Herero and Nama genocide was carried out by the German Empire in German South West Africa, now Namibia. After the Herero and then the Nama rose up against German colonial rule, which had taken their land and cattle, the German commander Lothar von Trotha issued an order to destroy the Herero. Many fled into the Omaheke desert, where German troops cut them off from water, and thousands died of thirst and hunger. Survivors were put in concentration camps, such as the one on Shark Island, where there was forced labor and a high death rate. Tens of thousands of Herero and Nama were killed, a very large share of both peoples. In 2021 Germany formally recognized it as genocide.
