Construction of Hungarian Parliament Building

1904

The Hungarian Parliament Building is a large Neo-Gothic building on the bank of the Danube in Budapest. It was designed by the architect Imre Steindl for the Kingdom of Hungary, which at that time was part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and was built to mark the thousandth anniversary of the Magyar settlement of the Carpathian Basin in 1896. Work continued for many years, with the building being substantially completed at the start of the twentieth century. It has hundreds of rooms and a central dome rising to 96 metres, a number linked to the year 896. The Holy Crown of Hungary has been kept inside since 2000, and the building houses the National Assembly.
