Bayer 04 Leverkusen was founded by workers of the chemical and pharmaceutical company Bayer, in the German town of Leverkusen on the Rhine. For most of its history, it was seen as a good but not top team, and its failure to win major prizes earned it the nickname Neverkusen. It won the UEFA Cup in 1988 and reached the Champions League final in 2002. Its fortunes changed under the manager Xabi Alonso, when the club won its first Bundesliga title in 2023-24 without losing a single league match, and also won the German Cup that season. The club is owned by Bayer and plays at the BayArena.
