Founding of Austrian National Bank

1 June 1816

The Austrian National Bank, the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, was established in Vienna in the years after the Napoleonic Wars, when the Habsburg monarchy had suffered a state bankruptcy and needed to restore faith in its money. It was founded as a private privileged bank to issue banknotes, backed by silver, and it became the central bank of the Habsburg Empire and later of Austria-Hungary. After the First World War, it was restructured as the central bank of the Republic of Austria. It was taken over by the German Reichsbank in 1938 and re-established after 1945. Austria joined the euro in 1999, and the bank now forms part of the Eurosystem.
