Charlotte Brontë was born on 21 April 1816 in Thornton. An English novelist and poet, Charlotte Bronte was the eldest of the three Bronte sisters who survived childhood. Her novel Jane Eyre, published in 1847 under the pseudonym Currer Bell, was an immediate success and is remembered for its strong-minded heroine. She also wrote Shirley and Villette, and The Professor was published after her death. She grew up in a parsonage at Haworth in Yorkshire, and her sisters Emily and Anne died young, as did her brother Branwell. She married Arthur Bell Nicholls in 1854 and died the following year, probably of complications of pregnancy.
