Founding of Audi AG

1909

Audi is a German manufacturer of luxury cars based in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, and is now a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. It was founded in Zwickau by the engineer August Horch, who had left the car company he had set up under his own name after a disagreement. As he could not use his surname for a new firm, the name Audi, the Latin translation of the German word horch, meaning listen, was proposed by the son of a business partner. In 1932 the firm merged with DKW, Horch and Wanderer to form Auto Union, and its four rings emblem stands for these four companies. After the Second World War the company was re-established in West Germany, and it was bought by Volkswagen in the 1960s.
