Enver Hoxha was born on 16 October 1908 in Gjirokastër. An Albanian communist leader, Hoxha led the country from the end of the Second World War until his death, as First Secretary of the Party of Labour. He had commanded the partisan resistance against Italian and German occupation, and then built one of the most isolated and repressive states in Europe. He broke with Yugoslavia, then with the Soviet Union after Khrushchev's denunciation of Stalin, and finally with China, leaving Albania almost entirely self-reliant. His regime banned religion, building thousands of bunkers across the country, and used the secret police, the Sigurimi, to imprison and execute opponents. The system collapsed a few years after his death.
