Construction of Milan–Malpensa "Silvio Berlusconi" Airport

1909

Milan Malpensa Airport is the largest airport serving Milan and one of the main airports of Italy, located near Varese, to the north-west of the city. The site on the Malpensa heath was used for early aviation experiments in the first years of powered flight, including by the aircraft pioneer Gianni Caproni. It developed into a commercial airport in the twentieth century, and a large new terminal was opened in the late 1990s, when Malpensa was planned as a major hub for Alitalia. That plan was later abandoned, and today it is a base for low-cost carriers and cargo operators. In 2024 the airport was renamed after the late prime minister and businessman Silvio Berlusconi, a decision that attracted criticism.
