Vienna offensive

from 2 April 1945 to 13 April 1945

The Vienna offensive was a Soviet operation by the 3rd Ukrainian Front under Marshal Fyodor Tolbukhin, with part of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, which captured Vienna in the last weeks of the Second World War in Europe. The Red Army crossed the Hungarian border and advanced into eastern Austria, and then attacked the city from the south and west, meeting German forces including SS units and volunteers. The fighting damaged buildings, including the Vienna State Opera and St Stephen's Cathedral. The Soviets declared Vienna taken on 13 April. Karl Renner set up a provisional Austrian government, and the country was occupied by the four Allied powers until 1955.
