Rodrigo Duterte was born on 28 March 1945 in Maasin. A Filipino lawyer and politician, Duterte served as mayor of Davao City for over two decades before winning the presidency in 2016. He ran on a promise to end crime and illegal drugs, and his war on drugs left thousands of people dead in police operations and vigilante killings, drawing widespread condemnation from human rights groups and an investigation by the International Criminal Court. His government also moved the Philippines closer to China, while ending joint exercises with the United States. He remained popular during his term, and left office in 2022; in 2025 he was arrested on an ICC warrant and transferred to The Hague.
