United States invasion of Panama

from 20 December 1989 to 31 January 1990

The United States invasion of Panama, code-named Operation Just Cause, was a military operation in which American forces overthrew the government of General Manuel Noriega, the de facto ruler of Panama. Noriega, once a US intelligence asset, had been indicted in the United States on drug trafficking charges and had annulled elections in 1989. After an American soldier was killed in Panama City, President George H. W. Bush ordered a large force of troops into the country. Panamanian defense forces were quickly defeated, and Noriega took refuge in the Vatican embassy, and surrendered in January 1990. He was taken to the United States and tried. The invasion was condemned by the United Nations General Assembly, and Panamanian civilians were killed in the fighting.
