Fall of Kabul

15 August 2021

The fall of Kabul took place when Taliban fighters entered the Afghan capital with almost no resistance and took control of the city as the government collapsed. President Ashraf Ghani left the country, and the Taliban announced the restoration of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. The speed of the takeover surprised many governments, as the Taliban had advanced across provincial capitals in the preceding weeks while Western forces completed their withdrawal. Chaotic evacuation operations followed at Kabul airport, in which thousands of foreign nationals and Afghans were flown out, and a suicide bombing killed many people. The Taliban took over twenty years after being ousted in 2001.
