The 2021 Haiti earthquake struck the Nippes department, on the southern peninsula of Haiti, with a magnitude of 7.2. It was caused by movement on a strike-slip fault system in the same broad region as the catastrophic 2010 earthquake. More than two thousand people were killed and many thousands injured, and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed or damaged, mostly in the towns of Les Cayes, Jeremie and surrounding rural areas. Rescue and relief efforts were hampered by gang activity, damaged roads and the aftermath of the assassination of President Jovenel Moise the previous month. Only days later, Tropical Storm Grace brought heavy rain and further hardship to the stricken region.
