Establishment of W National Park

1954

W National Park is a protected area in West Africa, shared by Niger, Benin and Burkina Faso, named after the W shape formed by a meander of the Niger River that runs through it. It protects savanna, woodland and river habitats and is home to elephants, lions, cheetahs, buffalo, hippopotamuses and many species of antelope and birds. Together with neighbouring reserves, such as Arly and Pendjari, it forms one of the largest and most important wildlife areas in the region. It was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1996. The park has faced threats from poaching, livestock grazing and insecurity in the surrounding region.
