Birth of Viktor Yushchenko

23 February 1954

Viktor Yushchenko was born on 23 February 1954 in Choruživka. A Ukrainian politician, Yushchenko was the third President of Ukraine, serving from 2005 to 2010. A former head of the National Bank, he served as prime minister under Leonid Kuchma before turning to the opposition. During the 2004 presidential campaign he was poisoned with dioxin, which left his face disfigured, and when the official results favored Viktor Yanukovych amid evidence of fraud, mass protests known as the Orange Revolution led to a rerun and his victory. His presidency was weakened by feuds with his ally Yulia Tymoshenko and by the economic crisis. He promoted Ukrainian identity and memory, including the recognition of the Holodomor, and lost heavily in 2010.
