Establishment of Talampaya National Park

1997

Talampaya National Park is located in the northwest of La Rioja Province, in Argentina, and protects a dramatic landscape of red sandstone canyons, cliffs and desert. The Talampaya river has carved a canyon with walls up to about 140 metres high, and rock formations have been given names such as the Cathedral and the Chessboard. The park contains petroglyphs left by Indigenous people before the arrival of the Spanish, and it is rich in fossils, including those of some of the earliest dinosaurs and their relatives from the Triassic period. Together with the neighbouring Ischigualasto Provincial Park, it forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
