Founding of G8

from 1997 to 2014

The Group of Eight was an informal forum of leading industrial nations, created when Russia was admitted to the existing Group of Seven, which consisted of the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Canada. Russia gradually participated more fully in discussions of finance and politics, although the G7 members continued to meet separately on economic matters. The G8 held annual summits chaired in turn by its members, and it addressed issues such as global trade, debt relief for poor countries and climate. In 2014 Russia was suspended after its annexation of Crimea, and the group returned to its earlier format as the G7.
