Nairobi National Park is the first national park created in Kenya, and unusual because it lies on the edge of a capital city, only a few kilometres from the centre. Visitors can watch lions, giraffes, buffalo, zebras and cheetahs on the savanna with the skyscrapers of Nairobi in the background. The park is also known for its black rhino sanctuary and for more than four hundred species of birds. Wildlife migrates in and out through a corridor to the south, which is under pressure from urban growth, fencing and land use, and conservationists have campaigned to keep it open. The park has long played a role in conservation education in Kenya.
