French Fourth Republic

from 1946 to 1958

The French Fourth Republic was the government that followed the Vichy regime and the provisional government after the liberation of France. Its constitution was approved by referendum in 1946, creating a parliamentary system with a strong National Assembly and a weak executive. Governments changed very frequently. Despite instability, France rebuilt its economy, helped to launch European integration through the Coal and Steel Community and the Treaty of Rome, and established a modern welfare state. The republic was also burdened by colonial wars in Indochina and Algeria. The Algerian crisis of 1958 brought it down, and Charles de Gaulle returned to power and founded the Fifth Republic.
