Establishment of Manovo-Gounda St. Floris National Park

17 May 1979

Manovo-Gounda St Floris National Park is a protected area in the north of the Central African Republic, near the border with Chad and Sudan. Its landscape is a vast plain of savanna and seasonal floodplains, crossed by rivers and surrounded by hills. At one time it held a rich community of wildlife, including black rhinoceros, elephants, buffalo and many large antelope, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Heavy poaching and the insecurity that followed rebel conflicts in the region devastated the animal populations, leading to its placement on the list of World Heritage in Danger. Its recovery has been hampered by continued instability.
