Establishment of Noel Kempff Mercado National Park

28 June 1979

Noel Kempff Mercado National Park lies in the far northeast of Bolivia, in the department of Santa Cruz, on the border with Brazil. It was originally created under a different name and was renamed in honor of the Bolivian biologist Noel Kempff Mercado, who was murdered in 1986 after he came across a drug-processing site in the area. The park spans a rare mix of ecosystems, including Amazon rainforest, savanna, and a high plateau called the Huanchaca with spectacular waterfalls. It shelters a great variety of species, among them jaguars, giant otters and many birds. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2000, and was also the site of a pioneering forest carbon project.
