Establishment of Khangchendzonga National Park

1977

Khangchendzonga National Park is a protected area in the Indian state of Sikkim, centered on Kangchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world. The park includes high peaks, glaciers such as the Zemu Glacier, alpine lakes and forests at lower altitudes, and shelters a range of wildlife, among them the snow leopard, red panda, Himalayan tahr and blue sheep. The mountain is sacred to the people of Sikkim, who believe that deities live in it, and the park is of cultural as well as natural importance. In 2016 it became India's first mixed World Heritage Site, recognized for both its natural and cultural values.
