The Chicago Marathon is an annual race held in October in Chicago, Illinois, and one of the six World Marathon Majors, together with Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin and New York. It was first held in the late 1970s with a few thousand runners and has grown into one of the largest marathons in the world, with tens of thousands of participants. The flat course starts and finishes in Grant Park and passes through many of the city's neighborhoods. It has produced several world records, including the men's record of 2:00:35 set by Kelvin Kiptum in 2023 and the women's record of 2:09:56 set by Ruth Chepngetich in 2024. Spectators line much of the course, and the race raises large sums for charities.
