The International Fund for Agricultural Development is a specialized agency of the United Nations, with its headquarters in Rome, set up to finance agricultural development in poor rural areas. It was created after the world food crisis of the early 1970s and the World Food Conference of 1974, which concluded that hunger was caused largely by poverty and by neglect of small farmers. The fund provides low-interest loans and grants to governments for projects that help small-scale farmers, herders and fishers to raise their incomes and improve food security. It is financed by contributions from member states and works with other Rome-based UN agencies, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme.
